Begin with the actual object

How to Use This Junk Removal Item Guide

A category is a starting point, not automatic approval for every object within it. Size, weight, condition, attachments, and the route out of the property can change what a pickup requires. Describe the actual item instead of sending only a label such as furniture or appliances.

For mixed loads, list each type separately. A sofa, a television, and several containers of unknown contents should not be described as one pile of household junk. Clear information lets the team identify questions before the appointment.

This guide focuses on items and preparation. Visit our full-service junk removal page for the overall process, cleanout options, and service-area links. For an item you cannot identify here, send a photograph and ask before including it.

Furniture and sleeping surfaces

Furniture, Mattresses, and Business Furnishings

These common pickup categories cover many household and workplace requests. Identify each piece and confirm the handling needed before preparing it for collection.

Sofas, Chairs, and Dining Furniture

Describe sectionals, reclining furniture, tables, and chairs by piece count and size. Explain whether a sofa separates into sections or contains a sleeper mechanism. Remove belongings from storage compartments and flag heavy or delicate components.

Dressers, Cabinets, and Shelving

Empty the contents before pickup unless those contents are also listed and approved. Mention glass panels, mirrors, wall anchors, and built-in sections. A freestanding cabinet and a fitted installation require different preparation.

Mattresses and Box Springs

Include the mattress size, quantity, and whether a box spring or bed frame is part of the request. Explain the condition honestly, including moisture, damage, or contamination concerns. Confirm any preparation requirements before moving the items.

Desks, Cubicles, and Conference Tables

Count the individual pieces and identify attached workstations or unusually large tops. Empty drawers, remove office records, and distinguish furniture from active equipment. Review dismantling needs and connected components before treating everything as ready to load.

Connections and components matter

Appliances, Refrigerators, and Laundry Equipment

Common appliance requests include refrigerators, washers, dryers, and ovens. Provide the appliance type, approximate size, condition, and location. Mention stairs, tight doorways, and whether the unit is freestanding or built into surrounding cabinetry.

Tell the team if an appliance is connected to water, gas, or electricity. Confirm who is responsible for disconnection and preparation before the pickup date. An agreement to haul an appliance should not be treated as an agreement to perform utility work.

Explain What Comes with the Appliance

Include pedestals, stands, stacked components, or loose accessories in the item list. Identify contents still inside the unit. Do not remove refrigerant or take apart sealed components just to prepare for hauling; ask what condition the team needs the item in.

Identify the device

Televisions, Computers, and Other Electronics

Tell us whether you have a flat-screen television, an older tube television, a monitor, a computer, a printer, or smaller electronic equipment. Include quantities and approximate sizes. Older or unusually heavy devices should be described specifically rather than grouped under a general electronics label.

Separate accessories, loose cables, and unrelated materials so the requested contents are clear. Explain damaged screens or broken components before pickup. Item acceptance and receiving arrangements need to be confirmed for the actual equipment.

Take Care of Personal or Company Data

Remove accounts and arrange data handling through your own trusted process before devices leave your possession. Do not assume hauling includes data erasure, destruction certificates, or other specialist documentation.

If documentation is important for your organization, explain the requirement before booking and confirm whether an appropriate arrangement is available.

Carpeting, Exercise Equipment, and Bulky Item Requests

Carpet, Padding, and Flooring Leftovers

Describe whether carpet is already removed, still installed, rolled, or mixed with other materials. List padding and flooring pieces separately. Confirm any requested removal work rather than assuming pickup includes pulling up installed flooring.

Treadmills, Ellipticals, and Weight Equipment

Provide dimensions, approximate weight if known, and the floor where the equipment sits. Explain whether it folds or is assembled from several components. Heavy weights and large exercise machines may need different handling within the same appointment.

Restricted materials

Items Great Movers Does Not Accept

The following exclusions are part of our junk removal service. Keep these contents out of a household or business pickup and disclose uncertain materials before booking.

Chemicals, Solvents, and Oils

Paint thinners, fuels, chemical cleaners, oils, and similar contents are excluded. Do not mix them into bags, boxes, or furniture being collected.

Asbestos and Hazardous Materials

Asbestos and materials identified as hazardous, flammable, or toxic are not accepted. Describe suspected or unidentified materials before including anything from an uncertain source.

Oil Tanks and Storage Drums

Oil tanks and storage drums are excluded whether sealed or unsealed. An apparently empty container should not be added to an ordinary junk load.

Medical Waste

Sharps, biohazardous waste, and prescription waste are not accepted. Keep these separate from general household contents and office materials during a cleanout.

Vehicles and Major Vehicle Components

Full vehicles, vehicle chassis, engines, and gas tanks are outside the accepted pickup categories. Do not assume they are included because scrap materials are being reviewed.

Unknown Containers

If you do not know what a container holds, explain that uncertainty. Do not empty or disguise it to make it look like ordinary household waste.

If one part of a mixed request is excluded, discuss whether the remaining approved items can be collected separately. Update the inventory so the final quote reflects only the agreed contents. Keep excluded materials clearly apart from that load, and confirm the revised list with the team before the visit.

Questions about specific items

Accepted Items and Preparation FAQs

Use these answers to prepare an item list, then confirm your specific request with Great Movers.

Does a listed category mean every item in it is accepted?

No. Condition, size, connections, access, and handling requirements still need review. Send information about the actual item before treating the category listing as approval.

Can furniture be collected if it is damaged?

Describe the damage and provide photos. Explain moisture, contamination, broken glass, or other concerns so the team can review whether the piece fits the removal scope.

Should a bed frame be listed separately from a mattress?

Yes. Include the frame, mattress, box spring, and any other components. Explain which parts are assembled so the complete request can be assessed.

Do appliances have to be disconnected before pickup?

Confirm the preparation arrangements with the team. Explain every utility connection and who will handle disconnection. Do not assume this work is included in hauling.

Can you take an older tube television?

Request a specific review with its size and location. Older televisions can be heavy, and acceptance and handling should be confirmed for that device.

Is carpet pickup the same as carpet removal?

No. Collecting already removed carpet is different from pulling up installed flooring. Describe its current condition and confirm the work included in the quote.

Should I dismantle a treadmill before requesting service?

Send its dimensions, photos, and location first. Ask what preparation is needed instead of taking it apart without an agreed handling plan.

Can paint or batteries go with ordinary furniture?

List them separately and ask before including them. Their composition and condition matter, and hazardous contents are excluded. Do not conceal them inside drawers or boxes.

Does an empty storage drum qualify as regular junk?

No. Storage drums are on the excluded-item list, whether sealed or unsealed. Keep them out of the approved household or business load.

What should I send if I cannot identify an item?

Provide a clear photo, its location, any visible label, and what you know about it. Explain the uncertainty so the team can respond before scheduling collection.
